Après des études chaotiques rapidement interrompues (physique, puis lettres) et un passage par le mouvement hippie, il est devenu écrivain professionnel et a publié bon nombre d'excellentes nouvelles et romans de Science-Fiction. Il a utilisé le pseudonyme Herb Boem.
